Sale Time!

Hi kids, apologies for being so quiet - I am still in study mode until mid-June, so there won't be much happening at Little Green HQ until then... oh, except this little ol' sale I'm having in the Little Green store, that is!

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Little-Green

Yep, TpT is having another store-wide sale from May 6-7, with many sellers further discounting their resources. I am discounting everything in my store by 20%, so with the TpT discount, you will get a total of 28% off! All you need to do to add the TpT discount is to use the promo code TPTXO at the checkout. Too easy!

I'm also extending my sale one extra day to May 8th, so you can still get 20% off, even if you accidentally miss the main TpT sale days!

Pop over to the Little Green store and get your cart ready for the big day! Happy shopping!

Source

Enter the promo code TPT3 at the checkout to receive a 10% discount on any item from any store. To sweeten the deal, many stores, including the Little Green store, are offering additional discounts. You can get up to 28% off these items by entering the same code at the checkout. Too easy!

Base Ten Brilliance!

See, I told you Little Green was back in business: a brand new resource has just been added to the Little Green store, and it is awesome (if I do say so myself)!

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Base-Ten-MAB-Numeral-Identification-Cards-1080768

Base Ten Blocks (also known as MAB) are a fantastic tool for helping students develop and reinforce a sense of ten - a vital skill. This resource is uber-versatile - ideas for use are included, but it really can be used for a huge range of whole-class, small-group and individual activities, only limited by your imagination!

In your download you will receive a set of numeral cards for the numbers 1-100...

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Base-Ten-MAB-Numeral-Identification-Cards-1080768

...and a matching set of Base Ten cards for the numbers 1-100.

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Base-Ten-MAB-Numeral-Identification-Cards-1080768

These cards can be printed onto paper or card stock, then laminated for durability, then away you go!

Here are some ideas for use:
  • select matching base ten and numeral cards in the range you wish to focus on and have students play a ‘memory’ style game where they must match a base ten card to a numeral card
  • use the base ten cards as flash cards to develop fluency
  • using only the numerical cards, have students build the number with physical base ten blocks
  • using only the base ten cards, create a ‘scoot’ style game where random cards are numbered and placed on desks or around the room and students must write down the numerical value of the card on an answer sheet

See what I mean - versatile! Get yours here. As an introductory offer, you can save 25% off the full price, but get in quick as it will only be at this price for a strictly limited time!

More great resources coming very soon - watch this space!

Hi guys - Happy New Year to you all! You might have noticed that things have been pretty quiet around Little Green HQ. Sorry about that. In my defence, it is summertime here in the southern hemisphere and we are on our summer break for five long weeks! It's quite hot!

No time for chit chat today - there's a freebie to give away! Without further ado, Little Green presents The Three Little Pigs!

I've found it difficult to find a version of this story book that I like, so when I came across these great graphics from Scrappin Doodles, I decided to make my own! Here are a few sample pages from the story. As you'll see, the wolf does come to a grizzly end in this version of the story.

100th Follower Giveaway... Coming Soon!

It all began back in July this year, July the 14th to be precise. Yep, this little blog is still a spring chicken! The Little Green Teachers Pay Teachers store is even younger than that! But a milestone is just around the corner. My TpT store is inching ever so slowly toward 100 followers. Now, I know that is small fry in the TpT ocean, but to me it is super exciting! Hey, it wasn't so long ago that the store didn't even exist! So let's just stop for a moment for a little hooray!

Well, ALMOST 100 anyway! To celebrate, I am planning to run Little Green's first ever giveaway. Woo hoo! Up for grabs will, of course, be some Little Green resources, but I'm hoping that some of my TpT retailing pals might be willing to offer up some of their terrific resources to sweeten the deal.

If you have a TpT store and you'd like to contribute a product to my upcoming giveaway, please email me: littlegreenteacher@gmail.com.

Now, there will be no giveaway until we have 100 followers in the Little Green store, so if you're not already following me on TpT, please consider doing so, and if you are already following me, please encourage your friends to drop by and follow too! Click here to go to the Little Green store, stat!

Watch this space kids - more details on the giveaway coming soon!

Top 5 Pins of the Week: Understanding Ten Edition

Yep, it's late! And normally, I'd have posted my weekly round-up of terrific pins well before now, but I have a reason for the delay: I've been putting the finishing touches on my most ambitious resource to date - my Understanding Ten pack!

This one has been in the pipeline for quite a while now, so I'm really pleased that it is now complete! To celebrate this resource going live in my TpT store, I've reduced the price (for a limited time only - get in quick!) and I am also dedicating this week's top 5 pins to ideas for teaching this most vital of skills - making and decomposing ten.

5. Pairs to Ten Coat Hanger - Take 1!

Source

As 'no-frills' as this idea looks, the concept is terrific, and so easy to make! All you need is a wire coat-hanger, ten pegs, some card stock, a marker and a stapler. This pin links only to an image, so if this photo is yours, please let me know and I'll give you the glory!

4. Pairs to Ten Coat Hanger - Take 2!

Source

Yep, same concept here, but this one is a bit more swish and comes with a freebie t-shirt template for you to print and use, thanks to Amy at The Kindergarten Center blog! I also like that she has used different-coloured pegs to show the 5-5 breakdown, as this will help to guide student estimations of 'how many'. Thanks Amy!

3. Zip-Loc Bag Addition

Source

Yes, I know, there are only 5 counters in the bag. But think of the possibilities for teaching pairs to ten! By adding 5 more counters, your students will be decomposing ten like nobody's business! Thanks to Jill at Mrs T's First Grade Class blog for this great idea!

2. Monster Addition

Source

Yep, I know, there are a couple of different addition problems here, none of which add to ten. But how cute are these symmetrical little monsters? And who doesn't love googly eyes? No one, that's who! Again, thinking outside the box, this activity could be adapted to allow students to decompose ten on either side of their monster using the googly eyes. This idea is courtesy of the No Time for Flash Cards blog - thanks guys!

1. Shake and Add Addition Centre

Source

This idea is a variation on #3 on our countdown, but I love the additional elements - counting bears and the giant addition sign get a big ol' thumbs up from me! This idea comes from Mr Greg over at the Smedley's Smorgasbord of Kindergarten blog (I'm a big Mr Greg fan - check out his blog if you aren't already a follower!), so thanks Mr Greg!

How do you teach concepts of ten to your students? If you are in need of inspiration, check out the Little Green Pinterest boards for more ideas. If you are looking for resources, be sure to have a look at the Understanding Ten pack over at the Little Green store!

Have a great week!

Freebie Friday: Hundreds Chart

Thank goodness it is Friday! Time for another freebie from the Little Green store: a hundreds chart.

We all know and love hundreds charts - they are a fantastic way to help our students see the patterns in their times tables, as well as having a smorgasbord of other uses! There is nothing super special about the hundreds charts I have created, other than that they use a beautiful background from Prettiful Designs, a chalkboard from Sonya DeHart and fonts by Jen Jones.

As well as the starter model shown above, we have the no-title model...

...the black-and-white-printable model...

...and the black-and-white-printable-no-title model!

You can get your copy here. I hope you find it super-useful, whichever version you decide to use!

Freebie Friday: Flash Freebie!

Hi all, welcome to another Friday! Today's freebie comes in the form of a flash freebie. That's right, this is a limited time freebie that will be available for today only, then will be returning to its usual price. Up for grabs is one of my favourite resources in the Little Green store: Creative Writing Dice.

Yes, I know I've harped on about this resource over the last week or so, but I just love it! Included in your download are three dice templates. One for characters...

...one for settings...

...and one for actions.

Students roll each of the dice to determine the three non-negotiable parts of the story that they will then write. Trust me. It is ace.

So, for ONE DAY ONLY, you will be able to download this resource FOR FREE! I would love if you could rate this resource and provide a short feedback comment while you are there, particularly as this resource is yet to be rated. It only takes a moment, but it really makes my day! Get your freebie here, but be quick!

Enjoy your weekend!

Storybook Saturday: Each Peach Pear Plum

Happy Saturday everyone! Today I am linking up with Paula at Paula's Place for Storybook Saturday.

The book I'm sharing with you today is an absolute classic: Each Peach Pear Plum by Janet and Allan Ahlberg.

Click here to see it on Book Depository UK.
Click here to see it on Book Depository USA.

In this beautiful storybook, we are invited to play 'I Spy' and look for the hidden characters in each image. We start off looking for Tom Thumb, then end up finding a smorgasbord of beloved fairy tale and nursery rhyme characters, including Cinderella, Baby Bunting and Robin Hood. Children love looking for the characters and spotting all the things that aren't mentioned in the text, such as the various woodland creatures that inhabit each page, Robin Hood's framed picture of Maid Marion in his lair and Baby Bear's lack of talent with a rifle! For this reason, Each Peach Pear Plum is visual literacy heaven! There is so much to look for and it is a great way in to discussions about the relationship between the text and the illustrations.

This book is also a great starting point for discussions about creative language features, such as rhyme, rhythm and alliteration. For this reason, I have used Each Peach Pear Plum as something of a 'mentor text' in my Amazing Alliteration pack, which you can purchase at my TPT store for only $2.

Get it here!

This resource is suitable for Year 1/Stage 1 in Australia and Grade 2 in the USA, and is aligned to the Australian Curriculum, the NSW Syllabus and the USA Common Core. Read the product listing for more information about what is included in the pack.

If you don't have your own copy of Each Peach Pear Plum, check your school library. It was originally published in 1978, and is still in print, so it should be available somewhere near you!

Enjoy your weekend!

Freebie Friday: 5 Great Resources from TPT!

Who doesn't love a good freebie on Teachers Pay Teachers?

Source

With that in mind, on this Freebie Friday, I thought I'd share some of the 100% free gems I've found on my travels around TPT. If you do decide to download any of these great resources, be sure to say thank you by leaving an A+ rating and a positive comment. It only takes a moment, and it gives sellers a little happy boost to keep on creating great stuff!

Developing Number Sense

Get it here!

Your first freebie comes from fellow Aussie blogger, Alison Hislop, who goes by AliMath on TPT. Alison has created versatile worksheet that you can use with your students to have them working daily with numbers. Also included in the download are several variations on the worksheet, so you are sure to find one that suits your cohort. You can download your copy here. If you'd like to read Alison's blog, you will find it here.

Cookie Counters

Get it here!

Mmm... cookies! This freebie comes from another Aussie blogger named Shanyn, who blogs over at Coffee, Kids and Compulsive Lists. She has created these great little clip art cookies that could be used for so many different things, for example: counting, subitising, ordering, and addition. Included in your download are black and white 'line art' versions, so you can add them to worksheets without wasting all the colour ink! Now, I know not everyone is into clip art as much as I am, but these little cookies are so versatile, I'm sure you are dreaming up a thousand uses for them, even as you read this! Get your free cookie download here.

Lesson Planner Template

Get it here!

This freebie comes from Michelle Brosseau, who blogs over at Mrs. Brosseau's Binder. Michelle has created a beautiful lesson planner template, that she has graciously shared for free. It is editable too, so if some of her categories don't apply to your situation, you can change it up to suit you. You can print and hand-write on your lesson planner, or you could type your lesson plans up. I just love the bright colours - anything that makes planning more cheerful gets a big thumbs up from me! Get your free template here.

Making 10 Game... with Monsters!

Get it here!

This freebie comes from Regan Tunstall, who blogs over at Tunstall's Teaching Tidbits. Regan has made this cute little game using adorable monster clip art, and the rules are simple enough for little ones to follow, so everyone should be able to join in the fun. The game works like 'Concentration' - the cards are face down and two cards are turned over in a turn. If the two numbers add together to make ten, the player takes the cards. This game would be great to play in a Maths rotation or with a partner. Get your free download here.

Editable Name Plates

Get it here!

The final freebie for today comes from another Aussie - The Teacher Gene. These little name plates are both cute and practical, and, best of all, they feature owls! Owls are my favourite! One of the great features of the download is that there are excellent, step-by-step instructions included for editing, so that when you have a long name to write in, you don't need to panic when it won't fit! Get your free name plates here.

I hope you get good use out of at least one of these great products, if not all of them! Don't forget to say thank you to the sellers when you download, and be sure to check out their stores to look at their paid resources as well. Don't forget also that there are HEAPS of freebies in the Little Green store for you to download and use. Have a great weekend!

Freebie Friday: Last One Out!

Thank goodness it is Friday! Even better, it is end-of-term Friday, so here in Sydney, we have two glorious weeks of holidays ahead! If school is still in session where you are, I apologise for rubbing it in your face, I'm just so glad to be taking a break from the daily grind so that I can focus on a few projects I have been trying to get finished. Expect to see more resources going up in my Teachers Pay Teachers store as I finish all the bits and pieces I've been working on.

Down to business. Here is your freebie for this week:

Doesn't it bug you when you return to your room only to find all the lights and fans on and the door wide open? Perhaps it is just me being easily irked! In any case, I made this little poster using cute kid graphics from KPM Doodles, a gorgeous background from Prettiful Designs and fonts from Jen Jones, and wanted to share it with you all, just in case it bothers you as much as it does me!

You can get your free poster here or by clicking on the images above.

Well, enjoy your weekend everyone, and for those of you heading into holidays like I am, enjoy your break!

Pins of the Week: being a great classmate, differentiation, tackling poverty, retelling ribbons, mental maths and a fun freebie!

Welcome to another week! It is our last week of term, here in Sydney, so energy is a little low. Never fear, inspiration is here once again from Pinterest! Here we go!

Great Classmate Anchor Chart

Source

This terrific 'beginning of the year' anchor chart is a great way to get your students thinking about how they can be a better classmate. It would also be a great discussion point mid-way through they year, when they are forgetting some of these basic manners and skills!

Differentiation Poster

Get your free download here!

This handy little poster, which is free to download, will have you differentiating your lessons like a pro in no time! It is a fantastic reminder of the different strengths our students bring to the classroom, and a great prompt for ways in which to tap into these strengths. In the same blog post, there are some other great differentiation resources and ideas to get you inspired, so be sure to stop by!

How Poverty Affects Classroom Engagement

Read the article here.

Poverty. It is something we don't like to talk about in relation to our classrooms, but research shows that students from low socioeconomic backgrounds consistently under-perform at school. Is there anything to be done? This excellent article gives some sound and practical advice about how classroom teachers and schools can begin to tackle the issues surrounding students from low socioeconomic backgrounds in our schools. Seriously inspiring!

Retelling Ribbon

Read about the retelling ribbon here!

Looking for a way to help your students structure their retelling of stories? Look no further! Andrea from 'Pencils, Glue and Tying Shoes' has devised a fabulous system to help her students that is both tactile and visual. Don't let the creepy blurring-out of the student's face in the photo put you off! Check out the post to read all about how Andrea implemented her retelling ribbons.

Mental Maths

Learn more about the benefits of teaching mental maths here.

I've long been a Mental Maths fan, but if you're not sure about what all the fuss is about, you must read this post on the Teaching In The Early Years blog. When kids have a number of strategies at their disposal, their skills across all strands of Maths skyrocket! Be sure to check out the post for more information.

A Fun Freebie

Get your freebie here!

I'm a big fan of owls, and these cute little owls will appeal to your kids too! One of my favourite TPT sellers, Michael Friermood, has put together four charming little bookmarks and, best of all, they are absolutely free! As Michael says, "Get 'em while they're hoot"!

I hope you are feeling inspired and ready to tackle the rest of your week. Be sure to pop back tomorrow for YouTube Tuesday!
